Shown within this document is my analysis of similar products to the ones I will be producing myself. I had analysed 3 magazine productions similar to my own: considering all of the codes and conventions within each product, paying specific attention and detail to what relevance it would bring to my own production. Moreover - I had also analysed and evaluated two billboard advertisement products, again, in application of how my own product would differ or form similar to these products in reaching my intended target audience members. Lastly, I had also analysed two radio advertisements, I had found in my own research that it was difficult to find advertisements for print magazines. However - advertisements for both The Guardian and the online streaming network: Netflix were accountable for analyzing the existing codes and conventions within both of these adverts. Altogether - this task assisted me in conclusively deciding how I wish to structure and organize my own productions. Understanding how new methodologies can work to produce new and exciting content for audience members. Also understanding how challenging codes and conventions within the media industry will help to innovate and inspire audience members.

Fuand Here I have outlined my 3 initial ideas for my main task of producing a regional magazine production. For this task, It was necessary to outline any ideas I believe to be significant in producing a print regional magazine. Considering the location the product would be distributed and where I would produce my photographs relating to the inner content. As a concluded result, I have decided to base my product on the subculture regional magazine - distributing it within the City of Brighton UK, with the hopeful result of branching out to London, UK. Considering audiences, the product will have a primary audience of those of the ages of 18 to early 30's. This being relevant to the linguistic codes within the product, which may be slightly complicated for younger audiences - however, readable enough to still aim towards the lower age group of the spectrum. This because youth subcultures are still an existing factor today with new subcultures existing also. A secondary audience would focus on the age range of mid 30's to late 50's, this being due to the fact the magazine may feature content upon youth subculture's in Brighton that existed during the 1950's/60's, (i.e The Mods and Rockers) therefore would highlight significance to these readers. Moreover, throughout my initial idea brainstorming. I had found that I would like the combination of both subcultures and fashion as chosen as a second idea, this would allow me to branch out to a secondary region (Central London, UK) this will be developed in my next task of expanding my ideas onto a moodboard format.
THEORY APPLICATION: A use of genre theory can be relevant here in selecting the best idea for my brief. Steve Neale, a genre theorist argues that pleasure is derived from the genre requiring REPETITION and DIFFERENCE and there would be little pleasure without some difference for audiences. Also adding that we may derive pleasure from how a product's genre conventions may be manipulated as a consumer. This is how I have considered my ideas to be approached, highlighting that although typically, genre can alter for regional magazines. But by using a combination of two genres - it will allow my primary audience to acknowledge the shifted expectations as the genre is being stretched and manipulated - heading in new directions. In addition to this, a use of representations theory can therefore be applied. As the magazine will primarily focus on subcultures, stereotypes of what makes that subculture a form of group will presumably be made. This post outlines my moodboard for a physical representation of my ideas for producing a main production (A regional magazine to be distributed within the area of Brighton, UK) and two ancillary productions (a radio and billboard advertisement to further brand identity of the magazine).
There are visual representations for my choices of typography to be used, alongside the genre content (types of news stories that will feature). This was particularly identified through the uses of imagery I would like to adopt throughout. I had considered the fact the magazine production will be regional: so although there will be consistent genre themes of my choosing: i.e the lifestyle, culture and fashion of youth subcultures as presented within the first issue. This has meant that the area is considered throughout and how this genre directly links significantly to the regional area. I had also considered types of framing for imagery, alongside how a use of a consistent color scheme will promote a clear running house style throughout, with audiences recognizing brand identity from this for future issues. |
